Modi appoints Panagariya as NITI Aayog vice-chairman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday named Columbia University economist Arvind Panagariya as the vice-chairman of NITI Aayog, the think-tank that has replaced the Planning Commission. Modi heads the panel.
NITI Aayog also has two full-time members: economist Bibek Debroy and former secretary, Defence R&D, V.K. Saraswat.
The ex-officio members of the panel are Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh.
The special invitees to the panel are Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot and HRD Minister Smriti Irani.
NITI Aayog came into existence on January 1 this year.
